20 years of Vet Nurse Training (2001-2021)
We can't believe it's been 20 years since the course launched as the
Certificate in Veterinary Nursing of Exotic Species.
It's been hard work, but great fun to meet (face to face and online) so many vet nurses from UK and abroad.
Simon, vet and Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, created the course, writing all of the materials, and has been the only tutor for 20 years.
It started out as a correspondence course with printed notes (some over 100 pages) sent out every 2 weeks. Thank goodness it's now online, with electronic resources, and flexibility for students.
The success of the course is down to Simon, with a little help from Mary, who began teaching veterinary nursing in 1999. Both have always believed in vet nursing and the importance of the role in caring for patients and supporting owners. It has been an honour to support vet nurses in their careers and hope the training has been helpful.
Here's to the future of vet nursing!
Quotes from students:
‘I have become the small mammal advocate for the practice improving standards and updating protocols’
‘It has led to me being the clinical exotic lead’
‘Led to getting a job in an exotic referral practice that looks after some zoo animal collections’
‘I run exotics nurse clinics confidently, help Vets who are not confident in reptiles’
‘We have lots of exotics at work, so I'm now the go to nurse, particularly when it comes to rabbit anaesthetics!’
‘Gave me more confidence in helping clients and doing exotic led nurse clinics. Also became a go to person for the vets to ask questions or refer clients where necessary’
‘I became the exotic nurse in our practice and helped set up our exotic clinic’
‘Helped me in my senior vet nurse role at an exotics only clinic and a pay rise’
‘It has helped immensely. I now hold the lead exotics nurse role in practice’
